Description of Activity
  • Teacher reviews action verbs learnt in previous lesson by means of a PPT.
    See: Review of can can't.
  • Teacher shows a slide and elicits the action from the students while
    using: I can … / I can't…….
  • Teacher presents students with a short online video What Can You Do?
    (using Can you….?)
  • Teacher elicits the action verbs from the story (run, jump, swing, throw, climb, catch, kick, hit, fight, smile, cry, walk, swim, sleep, drink and eat) and plays the game: "Prove it!"
The teacher uses a set of different flash cards downloaded from here and here.
Teacher shows the class a card and asks for example: Can you catch a ball?" / "Can you stand on one leg?" Students prove themselves by miming the action.
  • Students get a worksheet and write six sentences about what they can/can't do in different places (at home, at school, in the playground, at the zoo, in the swimming pool, in the book shop, in the park, on the soccer field…). See: Task 1.
  • Pair work: Students compare and contrast the sentences with a partner.
  • Teacher elicits from students who else (besides human beings) can jump, run, climb, … (answer: animals).
    Teacher asks:
    ‎"Which animals can climb trees?" (a cat, a monkey, a snake…)
"Which animals can swim?" ( a duck, a fish, a dolphin, a dog…) and more.
  • Teacher presents students with a song - "Can an Elephant Jump?".
  • Second viewing – students sing along.
  • Students write a draft in class for three new verses to the song, using the question form. See: Task 2.
Students' Outcomes Students will continue writing a song at home based on a draft started in class.
Homework
  • Students write their song on a Word document, add pictures and upload it to the Class Forum.
See: Homework Task. Additional activities to practice:
  • Practice can/ can't.
  • Listen to this song.
Follow-Up Students present, sing and act out the song.
